Write a short summary of what happens in the film
One Hell of a Ride is an Egyptian drug awareness film that depicts the sad and emotional journey of drug abuse. A young teenager is strapped on a rollercoaster, ecstatic and screaming in joy during the first half of the film - until at one moment he looks worn out, tired, regretful, broken and bruised. In the end, the rollercoaster metaphor hits the viewer with the reality of drug addiction.
Cultural / Context information for the jury
The film is universal in its core as drug addiction is a global problem. However, with Egypt drug addicts mainly being teenagers, we needed to find an activity (the rollercoaster ride) and the cast (young adolescents) to star in the film.
Tell the jury anything relevant about the direction. Do not name the director.
It was vital show the young drug users that we understand their pain and that we understand the highs and lows of substance abuse. And more importantly, we needed to exert a ‘rollercoaster’ of emotions for the viewers in the film in less than a minute.
The sudden switch from the ecstasy of drugs to the downward spiral of drugs came in an instant, so that it hit the viewer right to the core. We did this by focusing on every element in the film: A meticulous cast and cast coaching, a relevant metaphor for drug abuse (rollercoaster), the expressive sound design and even the vibrant colours switching to a depressing black and white midway through the film.
The first half of the copy seemed extremely fast, yet the second half seemed extremely chilling and slow – though they were both the same exact duration.
