The film is a tribute to the UAE on Golden Jubilee, and to the vision of it's first leader, Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan. Set to a stirring song composed for the film, the narrative traces the nation's history through emotive vignettes that illustrate the lyrics, from it's pearl-diving heritage to its modern space-faring achievements. The scenes span the diversity of the nation, showing everyday Emiratis in modern urban settings, in lush oasis, and in windswept desert landscapes. The film mixes archival and editorial footage, stirring national pride for the nation, those who lead it and those who serve it. The film ends with a vignette of Sheikh Zayed, and an ode to his vision for the nation.
Cultural / Context information for the jury
The UAE's 50th year was a time of joyous celebration, especially among Emirati citizens. To commemorate the occasion, First Abu Dhabi Bank commissioned a special film and music, created by Emirati artists, about the Emirates, for everyone.
The late Sheikh Zayed, the UAE's first president, is a beloved figure and is seen as the father of the nation. His vision and dreams for his fledgling nation are credited with setting it on its journey of success.
Emiratis take great pride in their nation, which has become a global crossroads and a leader in the Arab world. The UAE's leaders, armed forces, artists and scientists are praised for their accomplishments, including the Emirates Mars Mission, which sent a probe to Mars in the weeks leading up to the Golden Jubilee.
The film sought to celebrate these accomplishments, and capture the pride and joy of Emiratis.
Tell the jury about the creation of the original music track.
The heart of the film is the emotional poetry of its song. Renowned Emirati poet Arif Al Khaja was commissioned to pen the lyrics. Drawing on the national heritage of Arabic and Bedouin poetry, the song is a love letter to the Emirates and an ode to Sheikh Zayed's vision. Emirati vocalist Adel Abdulla brought the song to life and Nayla Al Khaja, a celebrated female Emirati filmmaker, wove the stirring soundtrack into the film. Shorter versions of the song were used for a radio campaign, and became popular in it's own right.
