Brief Explanation
We felt that the first step to creating a debris free airport (FOD Free) is to ensure that most staff, if not 100% of them, actually attended the "safety session". And therefore the invite had to be engaging enough, to make the mid and senior management, to attend this session.
The Brief
The brief from the client is to develop an invite asking the mid and senior level staff to attend the safety session on FOD ( Foreign object debris). FOD is basically all unnecessary items left on the air-side by the staff which pose serious danger to the aircraft and the employees working. The most usual FOD items seen are nuts, bolts etc.
How the final design was conceived
The invite is the first step that would inform them about the safety session. Invite is also the first touch point that had the potential to highlight the dangers of FOD. So instead of creating a conventional invite, we created a design using the debris material available on the air-side of the airport.
Indication of how successful the outcome was in the market
It was the first year that BIA (Bahrain International Airport) had over 90% attendance of the mid and senior management, to the Safety Week sessions. The invite was so well received that the CEO had one displayed on his office wall. It is also widely acknowledged that the safety week of 2013 had the most active participation as compared to any other safety week done in the past years of Bahrain International Airport's history.
