The Campaign

DEWA wanted to find a solution that would support the workers in monitoring the substations working scenarios for efficient time management, error detection & solutions. We suggested the DAQRI helmet through which the augmented reality solution could be implemented. The features of the software are guided work instruction, thermal imaging, preventive analysis, data visualization and remote monitoring. Each features, tackles a challenge. They would give and receive needed assistance on most if not all tasks. Both the expert and the onsite team member will be able to quickly and intelligently resolve issues and concerns within a shorter time frame, making the work efficient.

Creative Execution

We had 1 month time line. The initial face of the implementation was to place RND on the Daqri helmet, this was done to understand the advantages and limitations of the device. It was followed by the documentation process, in which we had to draft the scope of work, mentioning the commitments that were possible based on the device capabilities. Once we understood the client's scope we had to make sure that ours fitted within theirs. After the documentation process, we need to get the approvals from the clients regarding user interface. All of the above has helped us achieve the milestone set. Within the short time line of 15 days due to our loss of time spent in RND. Nevertheless, the time that was spent on the RND was useful as it helped us reduce our efforts in solving issues faced later on during the project.

We have successfully showcased the proof of concept that shows, how efficiently the POC can be scaled into the real world implementation for effective workforce management by means of industrial augmeted reality technology not limited to DEWA and also extending towards other service/industrial sectors with the help of Daqri Smart Helmet. Many were impressed. DEWA was pleased with the solution that was provided and it’s features and wishes to implement this on a grand scale. It is estimated that they will make great savings and be more time efficient. Currently we are working with more advance and developed model of the Daqri helmet and helping them implement this.

Because this initiative was to be showcased during Gitex. We decided to use a mock-up of the substation. Real life scenarios will still be applied where one would wear the helmet and be able to identify the substation scenarios and components triggered by sensors. Scenarios would vary from, transformer oil leakage to temperature variation on the LVDB Wires. The one wearing the helmet will be able to access all the data gathered and instructions needed showed through the simulation, helping him/her identify the problem and solution to solve it. This goes to show how innovative augmented reality has become. When this innovative initiative gets implemented across other businesses and industries it will transform the whole work force.
