Brief Explanation

A narrative experience. A time-capsule of the life experienced by Kuwaiti nationals born in the 1950s. Portraying Kuwait in its true form for the first time, we follow nationals’ lives as children, teenagers, adults, and elderlies. The footages kicks-off conveying children spending their free-time the only way they knew how. Following the narrator, we experience the extreme changes they were exposed to. From the change of currency, to the introduction of hamburgers. From listening to Um-Kalthoom, to the simplicity of their weddings. From the cars they drove, to a journey portraying progressiveness of hairstyles and trends. The film further exposes global changes they also had to adapt with. From a community living in mud-houses to villa-owners, from watching black-and-white films to virtual technologies, from mailing letters to communicate, to slowly upgrading to phones, pagers, mobile and internet. Also born in the ‘50s, NBK was there every step of their lifetime.

Being a country not big on entertainment or interested in acting, finding the right cast required more than just a casting-agency. Because the film required real Kuwaiti people with oriental characteristics, we faced another issue. With plastic surgeries being a dominant tool abused by most citizens, it was difficult to allocate Kuwaitis with authentic physical attributes who were willing to take part in the film. Contacting every social influencer in Kuwait and using them as tools to invite people for a casting audition, the turnout exceeded all expectations. From zero responses, to thousands of Kuwaitis lining up to represent the brand. The selection process was long, detailed and specific. With every shot imagined, we tested how each individual would look in a certain costume, with a specific haircut and the extent of emotions their faces could deliver, ending up with a cast that appeared tailored for the film.
