The Campaign
The Outlendar, National Geographic’s 2017 Calendar, is more than just a mere office accessory. It’s a kit that ignites curiosity, pushes people out of their comfort zones, and makes discovery part of everyday life.
Creative Execution
Packed in a portable box, the Outlendar can be either hung on the wall or taken on outdoor adventures. It features 12 different tools that each correspond to one of National Geographic’s covered topics and challenge the user to go out there and try something new. The dual function of the tools influenced the calendar design, making the Outlendar work as both a toolbox and a wall calendar.
Indication of how successful the outcome was in the market
While 1500 copies of the calendar were distributed to National Geographic’s business partners, media executives, and opinion leaders, the Outlendar did much more than just introduce the new platform. It made people actually experience it.
The Outlendar embodies National Geographic’s mantra “Further” that captures its insatiable quest to push boundaries and further our understanding of the world. An endeavor that seems vital in the age of the 9-5’ers, who mostly reside in the spheres of their office, gym, and TV.
Calendars typically sit on our desks and hang on our walls at home. They remind us of the passing of time, and symbolize routine. This unique calendar, however, is designed to get people out of the office and into the wild. It entices its users to ditch the routine, break out of their comfort zones, and give in to the lure of the unknown.
