To celebrate the anniversary of Pong in an engaging way, Kit Kat took advantage of digital media and allowed people to ‘Take a break’ while they browsed online. They created an interactive banner that would be present on 2 of the most visited news sites in Kenya. Namely mpasho.co.ke and ghafla.co.ke. When a person would click on the interactive banner and the visitor would play the classic game of pong; his scroll bar against the Kit Kat bar. This game worked on any browser and device.
‘Scroll pong’ became a small internet sensation. On the websites, users spent around 1.38 minutes on the pages displaying the banner. That is a 65% increase in average time spent. On social, the game also generated online conversations with people tweeting the experience and sharing their results.
The most famous personal video game in history, Pong, was celebrating its anniversary. A perfect occasion for KitKat to give the internet a break. So we rebooted the game online, with an unexpected twist to the gameplay : now you could play Pong with the scrollbar of your navigator.
