Brief Explanation

Our challenge was to create a publication which appeals to a wide-ranging and young demographic: all young people, male and female, between the ages of 14 and 25. The magazine’s design needed to have a clearly recognisable identity, stand out, and be clean, simple, uncluttered, and contemporary - while still leaving room for creativity - in order to make it accessible and engaging to our target demographic. The magazine’s design needed to inspire readers to get involved and interact with one8one, and encourage them to showcase their talents and creativity.

The Brief

To create a magazine for the young, multicultural youth of the UAE which educates, entertains and informs, giving its audience the opportunity to express themselves and be heard, as well as providing local youth with an outlet for their creative needs. All content should written and created by young people, aiming to enhance their sense of self-worth and fulfil their need to connect to one another. The magazine should be contemporary and wide-ranging in appeal; the cover featuring a young role model, and include volunteer models, of all shapes and sizes, in the fashion shoots.

How the final design was conceived

one8one, Illusion Issue #22, is a result of a two-year long design iteration process that involved staying ahead of trends in graphic and fashion design, as well as using original concepts in photography and layouts. In addition, one8one’s design has evolved feeding off feedback that is received from readers, industry and fashion influencers. Our design values are directed at providing content in an artistic, clear and accessible manner.

Indication of how successful the outcome was in the market

one8one has a readership of over 64, 000, and a growing social media following of over 17,000. The magazine is unique in being the only magazine distributed within high schools.
