Brief Explanation
There were two main challenges. Firstly, to develop a packaging concept that would house the volume of paper samples required in a fun, compact and memorable way. Secondly, to create a cohesive theme that could run through all the paper brands and samples. The primary objective was to create a beautifully packaged display that paper buyer’s would be compelled to keep and use to for all their premium paper stock requirements.
The Brief
Orchid is a Dubai based paper merchant supplying high-end international paper brands to the Gulf region and beyond. The client’s brief asked for a packaging concept that would feature eight major paper brands and display up to 600 paper samples in an easy to use desktop display. In addition, the client asked for a design that would reflect the region’s traditional Arabic culture but with a contemporary design feel that would have universal appeal.
How the final design was conceived
The design team took inspiration from the client’s brand strategy of positioning itself as a Gulf based paper merchant that sourced paper on a global scale. Based on this thinking the “Paper Planets” theme was created. The concept was further developed with an Arabesque calligraphic roundel design using a copy line that roughly translates as “Stellar papers / A shining constellation of papers”. The icon dividers “sticking” to the paper planets with gravity completed the design in a fun and engaging way.
Indication of how successful the outcome was in the market
Smiles all round. The client was thrilled with the results, receiving many happy testimonials from the paper buyers. Sales increased by 100% for Gmund, Polyart and Scheufelen, as well as significant increases for the rest of the brands.
