Brief Explanation
The programme is innovative, efficient, collaborative and so it makes sense that their business card – often the first point of contact with EPIC – suitably portrays this. We needed to create a card that did more than just show contact details, it needed to start a conversation and give a clear impression of what EPIC was about.
The Brief
The Emergency Preparedness Integration Centre (EPIC) based in Dubai, supports humanitarian workers in the field with their life-saving operations. These EPIC teams are the first on the scene in an international crisis to set up emergency communication networks. We were asked to design a business card that could introduce, differentiate and position EPIC at an international humanitarian conference attended by representatives from government, aid and corporate sectors.
How the final design was conceived
We thought about the nature of EPIC's work; to be the first on a scene to set up communication networks. As there would be people from all over the world at the conference, we decided to create a tool that could get people communicating as soon as they interacted with it. We knew that people would be wearing lanyards with their name and nationality (flag) so we created a tool to find the correct greeting for that nationality. The card would enable the user to communicate with anyone in any of 40 different languages, therefore starting a conversation immediately.
Indication of how successful the outcome was in the market
The business cards were a great conference tool and ice breaker, that aided EPIC in their task. In a simple way, the cards reflect the very essence of EPIC’s charitable work.
"The creativity of the card showed that we are innovative. The usefulness showed that we are efficient. And the novelty, well that shows just how collaborative and willing to engage we are! As a result, we made additional contacts with the card, including international vendors, educational institutions, humanitarian organizations and governmental bodies" Mariko Hall, Communication Analyst, IT Emergency Coordination branch.
